Audrey Hepburn

You would think the iconic star of Breakfast at Tiffany’s would have a huge sparkler from Tiffany’s as her engagement ring wouldn’t you? Couldn’t be further from reality. Audrey Hepburn was far ahead of her time when it comes to her engagement ring. She was stacking bands before it was cool.

Mel Ferrer and Audrey Hepburn met at a party where he convinced her to take a leading role in a Broadway play. These two would soon become much more than costars, and got engaged just a year later. Mel proposed to Audrey in his garden in Switzerland, the same location they would choose for their wedding. Instead of simply saying yes!, Audrey accepted his proposal by later sending him a platinum watch engraved with “Mad about the Boy”- a lyric from a Noel Coward.

Mel presented her with a rather untraditional ring, especially for a Hollywood star. In fact, it was three rings. Instead of an engagement ring, Audrey got to wear three bands. One yellow, one rose, and one white. The yellow and rose gold bands were beveled with a geometric pattern on the surface. The white gold band featured 1.5 carats of baguette diamonds in an eternity setting. Mel Ferrer chose these rings for Audrey taking into consideration her natural beauty- he didn’t want anything to detract from it. We think this was an excellent choice for Audrey as it allowed her to mix and match with her fashionable wardrobe. Essentially timeless.
