Stuart crystal jewelry were initially made and worn by subjects loyal to the Stuart monarchy, after King Charles I was executed in 1649. The King was widely considered a martyr and his loyal supporters stared wearing jewels with his image, his initials (in gold wire cipher), or even a lock of his hair, all set under faceted rock crystal. Hence the term Stuart crystal. Over generations, the jewels became personalized and some even consider these jewels to be the precursor to memorial or mourning rings. This particular ring is a great example of the period, and larger than most from the same era, considered a rarity. The foil and gold wire cipher are in excellent condition, with the prettiest deep pink color! A wonderful addition to one's antique jewelry collection.
