A very unusual seal with a bear walking across the grass, along with a feminine, flirty bow and ribbons flowing down the sides of the shield. In Georgian-era chalcedony that shifts colors from a translucent clear to a glowing pale blue, to a moody grey, depending on the lighting, this piece hails from Wales. In ancient Celtic culture, the Celts worshiped the bear goddess Artio - like a mother bear, she was a fiercely protective influence. The bear god Artaois is closely linked to the King, Arthur; with his legendary strength and fighting prowess, Arthur's name and emblem both represent the bear. Celtic families would often have their own animal totem, a tradition that is still evident in the family name McMahon, which means 'son(s) of the bear'. Because this bear walks parallel to the viewer, we interpret this as a mama bear on the alert, protecting her young. Fastened at the top of the seal is a magnificent bow with lushly undulating ribbons that ruffle down the sides of the main shield. The bow and ribbon motif is echoed in two delicate, hand-carved 14kt gold bows unfurling on either side of the ring. A wonderful talisman to wear as a reminder of the gentle yet fiercely protective mama bear in each of us! The seal face measures 19cm x 16cm. Currently a size 6.5 and sizeable.
