Quick Overview

One can’t help but smile when you see this fabulously cheeky “dancing pig” family crest seal. It likely hails from Ireland, where the symbol of a boar or pig features in many Irish noble families coats of arms. Notice the knight’s helmet atop a warrior’s shield, with a second, smaller dancing pig forming the family crest at the top.At first glance an odd yet amusing piece, however, the image of a boar in heraldry symbolizes bravery and one who fights ‘til the end. Aha! And now it makes sense, yes? The detail in the shield is amazing, complete with riveting around the edge as one would find in a proper knight’s shield. What was simply a funny seal on first glance, all makes sense when one realizes that this symbolizes the house of a brave knight. Today, a whimsical piece that’s sure to get noticed, and who knows…it just might instill a little more bravery in those who wear it!  Ours retains its original Georgian era 15kt yellow gold bezel – which has a rich, silky honey patina – along with a medium weight 14kt yellow gold cable chain, 19” with additional jump rings at 18” & 17”, to wear at a variety of lengths because options are always a good thing. It is larger, at 1.25” high x 1” across, definitely a statement piece that’s sure to get noticed!

Details

Coming from Dorset, England - but more likely originating from France - this is a unique and rare seal, in terms of color, motto and image. A gorgeous ultramarine blue with the image of the sea and a moon overhead. The image of a moon symbolizes serene power over mundane actions… and the words - in an old version of French
that required a Gallic/Gaulish scholar to properly translate for us – are part of a motto with an unstated inference, “Je ne change que m’apparence”, which translates to “I change my appearance, yet I remain the same” (the second part of the saying is inferred in old French dialect, but not explicitly stated). The sea and the moon are in a constant state of change and yet, they always remain the same. This seal suggests that while the owner may change their appearance, they remain the same person. A lovely sentiment for a landmark birthday perhaps? Or to celebrate an epic life event? Carefully re-framed into a 14kt white gold setting to enhance the bright blue color of the Georgian era glass, with a 14kt yellow gold rolo chain of 18” with a jump ring at 17” because, options are a very good thing!
